Interactive Notebook

4/3/2024

We created an interactive notebook as a way to reflect on various activities and topics that we participated in and discussed during class. These can be used for us as teachers when teaching ELA and writing and/or some may be activities that we can incorporate into a lesson for our students.

Grammar instruction

3/27/2024

We were given an assignment to create a short overview of grammar instruction for our current student teaching grade level. We also had to create either a physical or digital anchor chart to be used during the grammar instruction. Additionally, we had to record a short video teaching about the grammar instruction topic that we selected, and addressing our anchor chart. The purpose of recording the video was to give us a little practice with teaching using technology as there may be times when we need to do so.

Writing Lesson Plan

3/19/2024

Argumentative_Opinion Writing.docx.pdf

In my English Language Arts Methods course, we were to create a writing lesson and teach it to our students during student teaching. We had the option to select from the different styles of writing (i.e. argumentative/opinion, narrative, informative/explanatory). I selected argumentative/opinion to craft my lesson plan. We also had to read a book aloud written in the style that we chose. I read the book The Day the Crayons Quit.

Since my lesson plan was teaching the students about argumentative/opinion writing, I had my students write an opinion piece on the topic "Should School Go Year-Round?" I also utilized their writing on a bulletin board project that I also had to create for this course.

Writing Activity

1/31/2024

One of the assignments in my ELA Methods course was to create a writing activity that aligned with a writing style (persuasive, opinion/argumentative, informational, or narrative). I had selected opinion/argumentative for my writing activity. We were also allowed to choose the grade level range we were creating the assignment for, whether it be the grade level that we are currently student teaching in or a dream grade level. I chose to stay with the grade level that I am currently student teaching in ⎯ fourth grade ⎯ in hopes of using this activity for my ELA lesson that I am evaluated on. We also had to choose a book to help teach that writing style before having the students participate in the writing activity using that style. In the end, I did use the same concept for my ELA lesson.

The Big 5 Elements of Reading

11/27/23

This presentation encompasses the Big 5 Elements of Reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension). Each element includes a helpful visual/resource for teachers, a helpful visual for students, and a helpful resource for students. All have been linked in their images.

This blog includes experiences and knowledge acquired during time spent in my elementary ELA course.

Elementary ELA Padlet & Padlet Info

2/7/23

This post is twofold as I am including Padlet as a tool I used in my elementary ELA class as well as sharing about the value Padlet can have in a classroom.

My Padlet is linked in the "ELA Padlet" button.

I have linked the home page of Padlet in the "Padlet" button.

Elementary ELA:

I chose to use Padlet to collect various resources and pieces of information acquired in class regarding elementary ELA. These resources and pieces of information are ones that I felt were the most important or stood out to me the most, and would benefit me as I prepare for my career in elementary education, and in turn, continue my career in elementary education.

This Padlet can be an ongoing collection, and therefore, I can continue to add to it as I please.

About Padlet:

Padlet allows learners to collaborate by posting text, pictures, links, videos, voice recordings, and documents. Teachers can use this to generate discussion questions or post videos about what the class is learning, and have students respond to what the teacher has posted. This tool is also great for students to still join in on the discussions at home if needed, as long as they have a device.

Scarborough's Reading Rope

1/27/2023

The rope consists of five red strands and three white strands. There are two larger components -- language comprehension and word recognition. The red strands represent language comprehension, and the white strands represent word recognition. The combination of each subcomponent forming the two larger components is what creates skilled reading.

This is my replica of Scarborough's Reading Rope that I made in my elementary ELA class.
